Hyperion releases Alina Ibragimova’s Shostakovich Violin Concertos on vinyl
By Roy Gregory

The next batch of Hyperion vinyl releases is upon us and in amongst the expected (the Bach Suites from Isserlis, Bach arrangements from Angela Hewitt) there’s an absolute gem. Alina Ibragimova recorded the Shostakovich Violin Concertos back in 2019 (released in 2020), along with the State Acedemic Symphony Orchestra under the inspired direction of Vladimir Jurowski. The conductor, a long-time Resident with the LPO has always excelled in Russian repertoire and he does so here and, while Ibragimova, better known for her chamber recitals and recordings, might not seem the obvious choice of soloist, she clearly feels this music very deeply indeed. Her performance might lack the poise, power, instrumental intensity and control of Batiashvili’s DGG outing (on Echoes of Time – 4779299), but it’s more than a match in terms of emotional intensity and the recording is significantly better. With the CD spread across a double LP issue, there’s a good chance of great things, especially if Hyperion’s previous issues are anything to go by. Release date is February the 13th, but I for one will be pre-ordering!
