The Reference II is a lot of speaker that delivers convincing presence, impressive scale and a whole lot of music at what is, in today’s market, something of a bargain price. With its uncanny ability to embody the character and substance of voices and instruments, locating them, keeping them separate and distinct yet musically connected, the Diptyques are an entirely different proposition to the plethora of €50K box speakers on offer. In real terms, its nearest competition comes in the shape of the €70K Clarisys Studio, a speaker that is scheduled to visit soon. That’s going to be a fascinating comparison, but in the meantime, this Diptyque demonstrates just why panel speakers are enjoying their current resurgence – and just how musically satisfying they can be, with their genuinely immersive listening experience. My own high-end journey started with a pair of MG1bs, driven by a Beard P100 tube amp. The Reference IIs definitely provoke a nostalgic glow, but they also constantly underline just how far planar-magnetic design has come. It’s definitely time to start taking panel speakers seriously again – and the Diptyque Reference IIs are an excellent place to start.
