With three movements, each of them slow, the Symphony’s sub-title really captures the mood and that sadness pervades every layer and evolution of the playing here. This is a deeply affecting piece of music, calming, reflective and yet also hopeful. There is no mistaking the feeling that the performers have for the work or the emotional intensity that generates. Does this record supplant the SACD in my affections? The Polski Radio disc will always have that special appeal that comes with first blush, but I’m extremely glad to have found this beautifully performed and recorded alternative. If you know this music already, this is a performance that’s well worth adding to your collection. If you don’t know it already, it’s well worth investigating and, currently, this Domino disc is the best way of doing just that.
