Internals showing the stacked board construction allowing a single chassis to accommodate or be adapted to multiple functionalities.

The amps follow a similar path. The One Series offers a stereo chassis and an integrated, the latter combining a DAC and reduced power output stage with a simplified power supply. The Reference series ups the ante with a beefed-up (and bridgeable) stereo amp and also mono-blocs. Outwardly, the amplifiers are all but identical, except for the push buttons on the front-panel of the integrated.

The marketing department (if there was one) might suggest that a stronger differentiation between the One series and Reference lines would be sensible. The close familial resemblance might cause confusion (at least initially) amongst prospective customers, but it also allows a company operating out of three rooms with five personnel to offer a range of a dozen, incredibly sophisticated, beautifully finished and attainable components. It’s an object lesson in modern technology applied to both the task at hand and efficient production. Those investing in a B.audio system are investing in both style and performance.

The new Ultime two-box DAC, distinguished by the machined logo in the top-plate and the framing of the front display. The result is both attractive and subtly elegant.

Having reviewed the B.dpr EX ( https://gy8.eu/review/boxing-clever/ ) I can attest to the unit’s performance credentials, reflected in the company’s burgeoning reputation. In a field that’s becoming increasingly crowded, the B.audio one-box solutions sit at or near the top of the heap – especially when size, price and style are taken into account. But what’s equally apparent is the compromises inherent in such multi-function components. Convenient yes, they accept performance limitations in order to deliver that compact one-box form factor. B.audio overcomes those compromises better than most, but I’m not the only one to note that the stars of their show are their standalone DACs, units that offer superb performance at very approachable prices…

Which rather begs the question, what would happen if the B.audio boys got a whole lot more ambitious? Well, the new Ultime DAC and pre-amp are the answer to that. A subtle and beautifully judged step up in visual and presentational sophistication, the new, flagship products are unmistakably a cut above the One series and Reference line, while still being distinctly, unmistakably, B.audio. The Ultime DAC is a two-box design with separate, dual-mono, outboard power supply. The input/streaming circuitry is centrally placed with the DACs located symmetrically on either side, to match the separate power supplies. The front panel sports a single, rotary input selector, the display fitted within a slim outer frame. Like the other DACs in the B.audio ranges, the Ultime DAC is a software driven device, promising a long working life and the potential for future upgrades.
