If you are used to (and struggle with) the more bludgeoning approach to Beethoven’s symphonies, all massive force and irresistible weight, Savall’s fleeter-footed and far more agile, more subtle and more engaging cycle will be a breath of fresh air. Remarkable for both the consistent excellence across the performances and the commitment of the players, this is an object lesson in just what great recordings of great music can achieve on a great system. This is music that should be in everyone’s collection – and even if it already is, this is still a Beethoven cycle you should own. With an embarrassing number of vinyl, CD and SACD alternatives to hand, this is the one I reach for. The musical arguments are compelling, the performances are as accessible as they are enjoyable. But at €60 for both sets (that’s six hybrid SACDs) it’s also a solid-gold bargain.
