Blast Of The Past

Lockwood Majors – with just a few of the albums mixed on them!

The numbers are exactly what you’d expect, but still impressive. The 12” Academy claims bandwidth that stretches down to 35Hz and an easy 8Ω load. They don’t quote a sensitivity figure but I’d expect it to be in the low to mid-90s. The Major carries the bass down to 22Hz and I’d anticipate at least equal efficiency. Time (mis-)spent with dual-concentric Tannoys in my youth – 12” Canterbury and 15” GRF corner cabinets – left me with an abiding respect for just how potent that bottom-end could be. I suspect that it’s a characteristic shared by the Lockwoods.

The first speakers using the Volt HPD/SL driver will roll off of the production line in February, with the Minis priced at £8,691 (per pair, inc. VAT), the 12” Academy £9,184, the 15” Academy II £12,740, the Major coming in at £22,520 and the LE1, using the same 15” driver in a smaller footprint cabinet, £21,295. That places them between the Fyne Vintage and Vintage Classic models – and that makes them interesting, not least because the smaller, sealed-box Lockwoods were designed specifically to work in smaller, outside broadcast locations.

Lockwood will be attending the Bristol Show in February, so if you fancy hearing classic rock and pop albums replayed on the speakers on which they were mixed, you know where to go…
