Music that is as exciting and emotive as it is accessible, this is as welcome an addition to the cello repertoire as the disc is to my collection: Whether you are a seasoned classical listener, a musical explorer looking to dip your toes in the water, or anywhere in between, you’ll find this recording a rewarding listen. In some ways it’s a cello equivalent to Mari Samuelsen’s debut disc for DGG, mixing the solid, populist, classical repertoire with new and unfamiliar (or at least, less familiar) works. It’s also every bit as successful a project, begging the intriguing question, “Where next for Inbal Segev?”
One answer to that question is the download only, three-volume project 20 for 2020. A collection of entirely contemporary work, the 24/96 FLAC file of Volume 1 has been playing regularly on the Wadax Reference Server. It’s as musically direct and communicative as it is sonically excellent, with big, rich and dimensional instruments, played with that modernist combination of poise and real vigour. If you liked the incisive energy and musically flirtatious qualities of Caroline Shaw’s Orange, you are going to love this. If you liked Mari Samuelsen’s Lys, then this is almost a companion piece. With two more volumes to enjoy, I’m fully committed to the Segev path…
